Rock up your Doek and show your womanhood

Lesedi la Bathos Christian NGO hosted its first Woman’s talk aimed at encouraging Feminism in society. The event was held on Wednesday 9 August at Lesedi La Batho basketball court in Mabopane block B.

This was also to commemorate August 2018 which marks 62 years since the march of women to the Union Buildings against the past laws (dompass).

Woman of all ages from surrounding townships came together under the theme ‘Rock Your Doek’. At the event woman dressed elegantly with their head doeks which they said reminds women to take pride in who they are and where they come from.

The aim of this event was not only to celebrate the brave woman that stood up against abuse, rape, inequality and racism, it was also to inspire and empower young woman to be brave and stand up for themselves to say enough is enough.

Speaker at the event, Ms Kgaogelo Thobekile, former TUT Soshanguve SRC president and Lethabo Joy, addressed topics equality in relationships, marriage and the work environment.

Discussions were also around the phenomenon of women bringing each other down and the solution to the bad habit including challenges women face in the 21st century such as the number of woman abuse cases.

Woman were encouraged to speak up about their problems and never to tolerate abuse because a man can never change if women don’t set their minds to it.

“The biggest problem that woman face is lack of support amongst themselves, If only we as woman could stop being jealous about each other’s achievements, we could  achieve a lot,” said one of the speakers.
